Music Spotlight #0 - Longtime Favorites

welcome to my music spotlight! since this is the first one of these, I'll be going over some of my longtime favorite musicians, sorted from most to least recent. Reading this from bottom to top might make more sense! If you’re not familiar with my music taste, here’s the genres of music you can expect:
Indie rock, psych rock, dream pop, pop punk, shoegaze, ska, hip hop, vgm
This is just a small list, I try to keep my mind open to all genres of music!
I may update this post later with more artists/info if I think of more to add. Future posts will focus more on recent finds.
First, some favorites I think need no real introduction. Each one links to one of my favorite songs by them:
Radiohead,
The Strokes,
Gorillaz,
Weezer
Now, some artists you may not know about!

Wishy/Kevin Krauter/Hoops
Indie Rock/Pop, Shoegaze, Dream Pop
Album Recs:
Wishy - Triple Seven
Kevin Krauter - Full Hand
Hoops - Routines
All of these projects are super fun and easy listens for me. They’re grouped together because they all involve Kevin Krauter and share similar genres. Wishy is Kevin Krauter’s latest band and my current obsession lol. Hoops also has an unreleased album you can find out there called Halo, highly recommended!

Everything Everything
Experimental Pop/Rock, Electronic
Album Recs: Get to Heaven
I recommend jumping into this band the same way I did: the first song off of Get to Heaven!
I found this song in my discover weekly and was instantly hooked. I fell in love with the cover art as well, this whole album is a 10/10 for me. This band has a large discography of catchy yet unique songs, I haven't heard any other band quite like them. There's elements of pop, math rock, electronica, and more. Jonathan Higg's falsetto is also crazy good, I find myself watching their live performances a lot.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Lo-fi Indie Rock, Psych
Album Recs:
Multi-Love
II
Solid lo-fi psych rock music all around.

Kainalu
Psych Rock, Indie Pop
Album Recs:
Ginseng Hourglass
Lotus Gate
In search of music similar to Tame Impala’s first two albums, I found Kainalu. This project has become one of my all time favorites. Every song in their discography is dreamy, psychedelic, and funky.

Post Animal / Djo
Indie Pop
Album Recs:
Perform the Most Curious Water Activities
Decide
Twenty Twenty
Another band I found trying to find similar music to others on this list, Post Animal is a psych rock band with a lot of fun tracks. One of their members, Joe Keery, decided to leave the band to work on some amazing solo stuff as Djo. Since then, Joe has rejoined Post Animal and there’s even a new album! (i still need to check it out)

Pond
Psych Rock, Experimental Rock
Album Recs:
Beards, Wives, Denim
Tasmania
Pond is closely related to Tame Impala, sharing members between the live bands. They are often overlooked as Tame Impala shot to fame, but Pond’s discography is also killer. Their music shares a lot of similarities, but Pond feels more experimental, always trying new things for each album but never dipping in quality.

Tame Impala
One Guy
Album Recs:
Lonerism
Innerspeaker
A friend showed me the music video for Feels Like We Only Go Backwards way back in 2012 and i became kinda obsessed. It felt like Innerspeaker and Lonerism were made for me. The amount of layers and complexity of these songs was mind blowing. Since Tame blew up in popularity, I wanna highlight some of their older stuff. Those two albums mentioned are amazing but even less people know about the old demos and rock-heavy songs Kevin Parker made in the past. The cover of Stranger in Moscow in that collection is amazing. Not really a fan of how his music is sounding nowadays but oh well.

STRFKR
Indie Pop, Indietronica
Album Recs:
Reptilians
Being No One, Going Nowhere
Just some super fun and enjoyable indie pop. Honestly I could recommend all of their albums but these two stick out the most for me. You've probably heard their cover of Girls Just Want To Have Fun, but their whole discography is worth checking out!
Fun Fact: this band was the first concert I ever went to, great experience!

Streetlight Manifesto
Ska Punk
Album Recs:
The Hands That Thieve
Everything Goes Numb
I found this band in middle school from an old Eddsworld animation and have been a fan of them ever since. I think they were the first band to really get me into ska. Their style leans more toward ska punk which I think appeals more to me. After 12 years of no music, they’re finally releasing a new album this year!
(fingers crossed, they’re kinda infamous for delays lol)
